One of the most intriguing cliff dwellings in Mesa Verde, Balcony House is also one of few in the park that faces East, perhaps for sunrise worship ceremonies. The wall in the center of the dwelling divided the village into North and South sections, much like the duality of modern Pueblo traditions of community organization that includes the Winter People and the Summer People. Ceremonial and governmental responsibilities may have passed back and forth. Balcony House is accessible only via long ladders (not for the faint of heart) and must be exited by crawling though a narrow tunnel that provided easy defense. A spring at the back of the dwelling provided fresh drinking water. Anyone who has visited Balcony House will remember the climb, the “crawl” and the beauty of this spectacular cliff dwelling. |
