Farview Kiva, Mesa Verde

(The following story is included)

Far View House is an Anasazi ruin located on

upper Chapin Mesa in Mesa Verde National

Park in Colorado. Built around 900 A.D., it

housed some 500 people during its heyday and

commanded an inspiring view in all directions.

90 miles south, in New Mexico, is Ship Rock,

sacred to the Din-eh' (Navajo) is visible from

the top of this kiva ladder. This kiva (a Hopi

word) is a circular room built into the ground.

It was used for meetings, rituals, weaving,

tool- making, storytelling and instruction of

children. The kiva’s shape symbolizes the

Sipapu, the place of emergence by the Anasazi

ancestors from the underworld. On the floor is

a small hole, a reminder of thatjourney.

Above, we can see the  heavens, reminding us

of emergence again into the next world.
