This kiva (a Hopi word) is a circular room built into the ground. It was used for meetings, rituals, weaving, tool- making, storytelling and instruction of children. The kiva’s shape symbolizes the Sipapu, the place of emergence by the Anasazi ancestors from the underworld. On the floor is a small hole, a reminder of thatjourney. Above, we can see the heavens, reminding us of emergence again into the next world. |
